High School of Stirling. Edinburgh and Strathclyde Universities. Studies at the University
of Edinburgh and then at the University of Strathclyde yielded a couple of useful
degrees. I wanted to teach, but the death of my mother who ran a well-
At the same time, an enlightened headmaster at an early school, having heard that I was a fencer, persuaded me to run a fencing club. Such was the success of this club that Denny High School became one of the top fencing schools in Scotland, and I went on to coach at a very high standard. I became Treasurer and President of Scottish Fencing, and for twelve years, President of Commonwealth Fencing.
Although a pianist from an early age, I was one of the first pupils of a County Orchestral scheme (very much ahead of its time in the 1950s). I became a good violinist, leading a county orchestra and later conducting a local amateur orchestra before pressure of work forced me to concentrate my musical activities on church work in Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, Falkirk and finally Stirling.
Biography
TEACHING CAREER
Secondary school teacher at Bannockburn High, Denny High (firstly as a teacher and latterly as Head of English) and, from 1978 to 1998, Assistant Rector (headmaster) at Wallace High School, Stirling. Additional interests were in drama (with extensive experience producing school shows and operas) and educational reprographics.
Fencing started at Denny High and spread to Wallace High after promotion there. Both schools became top fencing schools in Scotland and one or two former pupils remain in international Scottish and English fencing teams.
THE EX-
After leaving teaching in 1998, opened travel consultancy. Worked for and latterly bought over & became managing director of DA Tours in Fife. Many happy years spent learning an entirely new craft and devising & operating tours all over the world.
Developed a blood cancer during 2006 and closed down DA Tours at end of 2007.
